Norwegian Cruise Line was founded in 1966 as Norwegian Caribbean Line; it had only one ship and offered service to Caribbean destinations. Soon, the firm acquired additional ships and established routes to Alaska, Hawaii, Bermuda and several European destinations. Norwegian Cruise Line is a pioneer in the cruise industry and has developed many innovations that have revolutionized cruising. The most significant of these was the development of “freestyle dining;” the company soon applied the freestyle concept to accommodations and onboard entertainment as well.
Norwegian Cruise Line Freestyle Dining
Freestyle dining means exactly that: guests aren’t bound to a strict dining schedule, so they can eat what they want, when they want it – and they don’t have to wear fancy clothes to do it, either. Before Norwegian Cruise Line developed freestyle dining, most cruise lines only offered formal dining; guests were expected to dress formally and arrive at the ship’s restaurant at a pre-assigned seating time. There was little room for spontaneity.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s freestyle dining strategy was instantly popular among cruise patrons who were traveling with children – and those who were simply free spirits. Guests were thrilled by their newfound autonomy and the variety that came with it: a patron might enjoy poolside burgers and fries on one day, and a stellar four-course formal dinner the following evening. Suddenly, they had choices!
Norwegian Cruise Line soon expanded the freestyle concept to guest accommodations, giving patrons the ability to choose from a variety of luxurious rooms and suites. The most luxurious living quarters are located at the very top of the ship, in an area known as “The Haven.” These suites are larger than any others and offer spectacular views of the ocean. Each suite has a personal concierge and butler.
Amenities Onboard Norwegian Cruise Line
A variety of suites and penthouse apartments lies just below The Haven. These accommodations have up to three bedrooms; they also include personal concierge service and a private balcony. Norwegian’s line of spa suites pampers guests with easy access to the ship’s spa and complimentary use of the steam room, sauna, thermal suites and hydrotherapy pool. Ships also offer studio apartments and mini-suites, which are ideal for families with children.
Activities Onboard Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line offers guests an expansive lineup of activities and entertainment choices. Each ship contains a fitness center, putting green, and a casino; some ships offer two or three gambling venues. Some cruise packages include family-friendly entertainment, including photo ops with costumed cartoon characters such as SpongeBob Squarepants.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s large fleet offers cruises to many exotic destinations, including Hawaii, Alaska, Bahamas, New England and the Mexican Riviera. Guests who simply want to take a few days to “get away from it all” love Norwegian’s weekend cruises, which offer many of the same amenities as longer cruise packages. Entertainment includes Broadway musicals (performed live on the ship) and stand-up comedy. Two-night cruises depart from Boston, New York or Miami; one-night trips depart from New York only.
Norwegian Cruise Line has established itself as one of the finest firms in the world, and deservedly so. Its combination of impeccable service, customer autonomy, affordable ticket prices and opulent amenities makes Norwegian Cruise Line a fantastic choice for experienced and novice cruisers alike.
